    Jango’s Chin

    D: Oda-sensei! One… Two… Jango!!!

    O: Guuuuuuuuuuu*ha*!! Good morning!!

D: Recently, I heard a little kid in the neighborhood say “Where can I go to meet Luffy?”. Where is it? Is it the North Sea? The Mediterranean Sea? The Tone River? Or is it Lake Biwa?

O: Aah… where to go to meet him, now that’s a tough one. Anyway, if you go on a leisurely boat ride you might meet him, or you might not. But Buggy could be out there, so please be careful. Really.

D: Ummmm, about 1 – 2 – Jango: what’s that striped thing on his chin?

O: A mushroom. Before he ever became a pirate, he was a “wandering dancer”. But business wasn’t so good, so all he did was sleep. He didn’t even take baths. And eventually a striped fungus grew from his filthy chin. He was so hungry, he tried eating the cap of the mushroom anyway, and it was disgusting! But he gulped it down anyways, and after that he somehow gained the ability to hypnotize people. Therefore, the striped thing on his chin is a “leftover mushroom”.

      Superonovas’ profiles

D: Greetings Oda-chi ♡ Appearing in SBS is like a dream for me. Anyway, I have tons of questions I want to ask, but here’s the one I’m most curious about, no doubt about it! Please tell me the ages and heights of the rookies ♡ I’ll be waiting until the end of time P.N. Lui

O: Okay okay. This is how they were two years ago. Just add two years to those who’ve reappeared in the present. And go ahead and assume that their heights haven’t changed. Because of her ability, Bonney’s age is just an estimation.

Luffy made a cameo in DBZ before One Piece was even released :D

A Chinese net user uploaded a panel from what’s supposedly an old Dragon Ball manga. In it, you can see the back of a straw hat (kinda like Luffy’s) and a skinny character in a tank top (kinda like Luffy). This seems to be the only place that this character pops up.

Here’s the catch: the original Dragon Ball, where this was apparently discovered, ran until 1995. One Piece didn’t start until 1997.

So did this panel influence Oda? Not sure. Maybe. Or maybe it’s just a coincidence.

          Inspiration from Oscar Wilde

In Oscar Wilde’s short story “The fisherman and his soul”, the fisherman had to remove his soul by cutting off his shadow with a pair of scissors in order to live with the mermaids. Fittingly, the Straw Hats were on their way to Fishman Island before their shadows were cut off by Moriah.

Track the stylistic evolution of Eiichiro Oda’s most famous One Piece characters

            One Piece’s stylistic evolution

            129

A recent post by a Japanese internet forum user showed the evolution of series’ creator Eiichiro Oda’s artwork by comparing older pictures of the Straw Hat Pirates with more recent ones side-by-side. While most of the changes are fairly subtle, the slight differences were still enough to spark an online debate about which of the two drawing styles is better.Which is your personal preference?

In this writer’s humble opinion, Oda’s character designs have hardly changed at all (with the exception of Chopper), especially when compared with the drastic stylistic changes of other famous manga artists over time (in particular, I’m thinking of Akira Toriyama’s legendary Dragon Ball, Kosuke Fujishima’s Oh My Goddess!, or even my personal favorite, Rumiko Takahashi’s Inuyasha).

It’s only natural that an established artist’s style will evolve over time in response to personal preference or outside influences. Masashi Kishimoto, author of the recently concluded Naruto manga, has even stated that he adapted his drawing style to more closely resemble that of the anime series once it began airing. Of course, the fans themselves can have differing opinions about whether those changes are for the better or worse.

              Sanji can’t kick a woman

D: Here’s my question: on p. 80 of Volume 42, Sanji says “I was raised to never kick a woman.” Would that have been a lesson from Zeff the Chef? Would that mean Zeff is very soft on women, as well? Tell me. from Ariga-san

              baratie2

O: Oops, this one’s from the same person as the last one. This is a good question though, so I’ll answer it. When I drew Sanji vs Kalifa (Chapter 403), some people lauded Sanji’s stance, and some people felt sorry for him. The truth is, I didn’t really want to write those lines. Sanji doesn’t have a “policy” of not kicking women; the truth is that he actually CAN’T kick them. He is a very proud man. I think he was really frustrated at that. I think Nami recognized that, and chose to praise him for once. It’s a scene that I hope will resonate with male readers, but everyone’s free to take it as they wish. Also, Zeff is just a man among men.

                Franky – BF 36

D: Oda-sensei, I have a question. In Volume 42, Chapter 405 “Power”, when Franky uses his “seek-and-destroy cannon” it says “BF36” on his shoulders. That stands for Battle Franky 36, right?! Well?! P.N. Soge Q

O: Yes…!! That’s right. As you will know from reading Franky’s flashback, Franky created his own line of 35 battleships called Battle Franky. After his ships were used to hurt someone he loved, and he used that same sense of technological wizardry to fix his own body, he carved the symbol BF-36 into himself and put an end to his career of shipbuilding. After that, he became a dismantler

                  One Piece Family

D: Hello, Odacchi! I have a question; will you hear me out? …Oh, you will? Thanks! Here goes. In the song the Straw Hats sing called “Family”, they have a line that goes “We’re not acquaintances, we’re not friends, we’re family”. If the Straw Hats really were an actual family, who would be the dad, and who would be the mom? P.N. Nashi

                  MT9_-_Family_Time

Although the One Piece family theater was different, Oda replied this way :

O: “Family” has been aired on TV, and it seems to be the most popular out of all the character songs. I really love it, too. My answer would currently be something like this.

                  • Dad: Franky (Thug)
                  • Mom: Robin
                  • First Son: Zoro
                  • Second Son: Sanji (Punk)
                  • Daughter: Nami
                  • Third Son: Usopp
                  • Fourth Son: Luffy
                  • Youngest: Chopper

Brook wasn’t introduced in the manga at the time this question was asked. He’d probably be an old perverted grandfather…
