THE ALLIANCE OF 21 KINGDOMS: HEAVEN’S CIVIL WAR AND THE TRUE MEANING OF D.

As with most of my theories i’m going to start in the middle and then explain myself, because I have no idea how to organise these things better – I believe that the Ancient Kingdom was originally a member of the World Government

Why, you ask? I’m sure we’re all familiar with Oda’s love of referencing other works of fiction. From Norse mythology to the Wizard of Oz, and of course Impel Down being largely based on Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy

There is likely another reference to Christian-inspired epic poetry in One Piece. Specifically, John Milton’s Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost details both Lucifer’s war against God, as well as his journey to the Garden of Eden in order to tempt Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge. So why do I think this is referenced in One Piece?

Let’s start with the tree of knowledge. This is a common abbreviation and the full name is “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”. But i’ll come back to that. The tree of knowledge is directly referenced in One Piece

The Oharan library. Known as the tree of knowledge. As we all know, it contained a Poneglyph. Poneglyphs are believed to contain the knowledge of the void century, which will likely reveal that the World Government aren’t as righteous as they’d have their member nations believe. “The knowledge of good and evil”, then

This casts the ancient kingdom then, in the role of Lucifer and his army. I’m not sure of the specifics of their falling out with the other members but given what we know of Joyboy it was likely over treatment of non-human species, though this is irrelevant. They inevitably began a civil war with the “Gods” of Mariejois

Of course the Ancient Kingdom were defeated, but they left the Poneglyphs, containing the knowledge of good and evil, for their descendants to find and reveal to the world

The D. Family

The journey through the Grand Line is representative of Satan’s journey through the abyss outside of hell to reach Eden. It is the goal of the D.’s to use the knowledge of good and evil to reveal the World Government’s true nature to the world

This all makes a particular line by everyone’s favourite nerd dad Corazon MUCH more poignant. The D.’s are God’s natural enemy. That’s right, I believe that all those people insisting that the D. means “devil” are correct, but not for any of the reasons they believe. Nothing to do with demons or devil fruits or turning evil, but in a much more symbolic sense. It could very well actually be short for something entirely different yet still hold this meaning

As an aside, this also sheds some light on the true meaning of Blackbeard’s jolly roger

It’s not a Cerberus. I’m going to circle back to Divine Comedy here instead of Paradise Lost, because in it, Satan is described as follows –

“he had three faces: one in front bloodred;
and then another two that, just above
the midpoint of each shoulder, joined the first;
and at the crown, all three were reattached;”

Blackbeard’s jolly roger is actually a depiction of Satan. This may indicate that he is descended from the leader of the AK himself, or perhaps that Blackbeard is aware of the meaning of D.
