I would talk about the mystery and real nature of Strawhat Pirate crew’s Pirate Hunter: Roronoa Zoro.

Roronoa Zoro and his origins currently in the series, along with 3 other original Strawhat crewmembers, Nami, Sanji and Ussop remains as a mystery.

Aside from their initial backstories, the 4 original recruits of Luffy, especially Ussop and Zoro, recieved almost too little backstories regarding their origins.

I always thought these 4 are special characters, including Luffy, not only with their roles in the story, but also with their origins which is highly connected to the whole Void Century thing.

I could categorize the Strawhats into this group, if I may label it like that:

1. The East Blue Recruits: Zoro, Nami, Ussop and Sanji.

They are apparently, the more human recruits of Luffy (or so it seems), and we could basically say the foundation of the Strawhat crew. They fulfill the roles to set the story up and provide the needed basic roles in the ship (navigation, cooking, weapon specialist, inventions, ship fixing, flag making, first-aid)

2. The Paradise Recruits: Chopper, Nico Robin, Franky and Brook.

I would consider these 4 as the guys who made the Strawhat Crew diversed. They are the ones who provided the roles to expand the story (Archeologist) and fill the minor roles in the crew or take over the roles of the original Strawhats (Shipwright, Musician, Doctor), also, I believe that these 4 would NOT get any more backstories, what you see from their origins is what you get; and that includes Franky and Brook, I believe. While Franky was said to have pirate parents, I think it would not be tackled upon since Tom provided the parent figure of Franky.

And though it can be said the same for Nami, the Paradise recruits already provided important aspects of the story that is connected to either Luffy’s fate or the Void Century that completes their characters aside from their dreams, unlike the 4 original members; Robin became the catalyst for the angle of Void Century, Franky opened up the angle of Pluton, an ancient weapon, Chopper’s dream is already tied in to Luffy’s impending critical condition at the end of series and Brook’s relationship with Crocus, a former crewmember of Gol D. Roger.

3. The New World Recruits: Jinbe, Tashigi, An Elbaf Warrior and Smoker.

These 4, are the guys I would say that would tie the loose ends in the story (Oda does everything for a reason) If the original recruits are the ones who provided the main gist of the story and the Paradise recruits expanded the story, the New World recruits are all connected in the sense that they will complete the puzzle of the story: Yonkous, Revolutionaries and Ancient Weapon.

And while the original recruits provided the basic roles of the ship, and the next 4 recruits filled the holes, I believe the 4 next strawhat would NOT have any specific positions or roles in the ship, but instead, they would bridge the gap between differences in the series like; human and fishmen, pirates and marines and past and present.

The 3rd set of recruits, instead of roles, will present a different kind of diversity, 2 monsters (a fish and a giant) and 2 humans who are very different from the rest (1 marine who despises pirates and 1 female who wants to compete equally with males…not to mention, a logia as well.)

I believe the 3rd set of recruits will be a statement on how Luffy and the original Strawhats would be able to surpass Gol D. Roger and his legacy, or at least, their selves.

1. Jinbe – Nami coming into terms and being in the same ship with the same race she grew up hating. We could aslo assume Sanji is connected to Jinbe in a way.

2. Tashigi – Zoro having someone to pass Wado Ichimonji after the voyage, especially since she resembles his old friend so much. Sanji might also have someone who would not shun him. (I kid, I kid)

3. Elbaf Warrior – Ussop achieving his dream to go and even having an Elbaf Warrior as a crewmate.

4. Smoker – Luffy recruiting his so-called “rival” who unlike Roger, never crossed that boundary with Garp.

Now that is out of the way, let us discuss the first of the original recruits of the Strawhat Pirate Crew, Roronoa Zoro and his true origins.

Roronoa Zoro’s backstory revolved around his connection with Kuina, and how he developed his dream, but it was never mentioned on where he came from, he just appeared in front of Koshiro wanting to challenge every students in Koshiro’s dojo and we all know how it turned out between him and Kuina.

There was very little evidence on Roronoa Zoro’s origin and true nature, so what we are gonna do is to use some speculation and possible hints to give a good hypothesis on this theory.

Even before Zoro was formally introduced, Coby described Zoro as a “blood thirsty monster or devil” as Luffy expressed his desire to recruit him.

During his fight against Kaku, Zoro, for the first time, exhibited a kind of power that is impossible to explain by natural means: Asura.

Even Kaku mentioned that he felt an “evil” aura in that moment.

Most of Zoro’s moves are a reference to either unlucky animals.

Non-christian references. Specifically Buddhist and Hindu references, in which pertains heavily to the idea of reincarnation

or the devil itself.

During the Skypiea Arc, Zoro expressed his disbelief in God and I believe this heavily hinted that Zoro is the anti-God.

Now, I think you’ll get the idea that “hey, Zoro is an anti-God, then that means he is a D!”

Not necessarily.

Because eventhough D people are said to be as the natural enemies of the Gods, which is clearly a figurative comparison to Tenryuubitos, Zoro, is referencing and the hints that was given, is referencing to God itself.

You get my drift?

Roronoa Zoro is not a human.

Roronoa Zoro is the incarnation of the Devil itself. specifically, a soul of a devil that never found a fruit, but instead, one that escaped from Uranus like the Yami-Yami No Mi.

The Shinu-Shinu No Mi, or the Death Fruit.

Unlike the Yami-Yami No Mi, that came from Blackbeard’s direct ancestor and resided in the fruit and chose Blackbeard to be his owner, the Shinu-Shinu No Mi wandered for ages until it decided to use Zoro as a container.

If i’m gonna make a bet, while Zoro is at her mother’s womb.

It’s the reason why Zoro got a very bad sense of direction.

And like Luffy, Sanji and Ussop, who got rare types of lineages in them, Zoro’s endurance and strength is abnormal.

It’s also the reason why Zoro, Luffy and Ace knew that Blackbeard got other “entities” inside him.

Its one thing to have an Observation Haki, but I think otherwise.

Luffy and Ace are D’s that can subconsciously sense Blackbeard’s nature, because of him being a D as well.

And Zoro having inside a cursed soul inside him, subconsciously sensed Blackbeard’s secret, because Blackbeard also got a cursed soul.

I would like to add that I believe there are 3 cursed souls in the series.

1. Yomi-Yomi No Mi – one that gives back the soul of the owner and uses power from the Underworld.
2. Shinu-Shinu No Mi – one who controls the souls of the dead and uses the power of the Devils.
3. Yami-Yami No Mi – one who controls and claims dominance to other souls (that came from Uranus) and uses the power of the deepest pit, the Abyss or the Void.

Now, you may think i’m just bullshitting around, but I do believe that these abilities, (in Zoro’s case, his soul) are referencing the definitions of levels of hell from the Buddhism, Greek, Hinduism and even Christian beliefs.

They all differ, but I think they all agree on it having 3 main areas, in this case we would use the Greek Mythology.

The Shades – which I believe is the direct reference to Yomi-Yomi No Mi, which is where the River Styx is located, in this area, we can still bring the dead back, which is obviously Brook’s primary ability.

It’s also a reference to Yomi, or the Japanese version of the Underworld, in which Izanagi recovered Izanami from the dead.

The Elysian Fields – although this is described in the Greek Myths as a place of warriors, this still the place of the death, in which I think references the Shinu-Shinu No Mi, which is Zoro’s soul.

The Tartaros – A direct reference to Yami-Yami No Mi, the Abyss, in which is a place of complete darkness where no light can go through and is a place of suffering and punishment for grave sins.

Oh, did I mentioned that it’s being guarded by Cerberus, a three-headed dog which is a direct reference to Blackbeard’s jolly roger?

If there’s one thing that follows Zoro, it’s unlucky, cursed and evil things.

In Lougetown, Zoro was chosen by the cursed sword, Sandai Kitetsu.

Zoro was chosen by the cursed Samurai, Ryuuma.

And Zoro possess a very “animal” presence within him, as stated by many people.

And the reason why Zoro does not get weak on seawater, even though he had a “soul of the devil” inside him (that came from the moon), was because unlike the Yomi-Yomi, his devil soul did not get actually get caught in the Uranus and assumingly just roamed the world for centuries until it resided inside Zoro.

  1. That was pretty cool man!

  2. Good theory, I really like it, but how explain that Zoro can swin with a devil fruit ? Even Black Beard cannot swim and he’s got a very special DF…
I think that if Zoro is a devil, it’s not a devil fruit. But I really like you’re theory, because I feel the same for Zoro : it’s a devil !! Specially on Enies Lobby, when he use Ashura. I think Zoro is special… But we have to wait until Oda-sensei tell us the truth !!
