So as the name and the picture suggests this is a theory on Rayleigh’s powers…
As we all know Rayleigh’s alias is the Dark King. My theory is that he got this name by his top of world(once upon a time, now weakend due to old age) CoA:hardening(maybe stronger than or epual to the pk).
You can see the toughness of his haki in instances like in the fight with Kizaru he coated his sword in CoA so that it wont get cut by Kizaru’s sword(since it is concentrated beam of lighting so it works like laser)
and also the speed at which he came to kick Kizaru from attacking Zoro was also achieved by using CoA on his feet and then kicking the ground (like instant movement in uq holder or negima if you know about those two)
in the gif above it shows the dust rising from his feet…
also when he came to Marineford shot bullets with bare hands and then shattering the cannonballs although this can be acheived by the kuja also,the speciality of Rayleigh lies in shooting multiple bullets with accuracy and CoA embbedded into them
so instead of a baseless statement that “the demon” resides in Rayleigh I suppose he was called the Dark King because he had insane CoA: hardening levels like being able to put three layers on top of his body or atleast he was the first person who introduced the common world to “hardening” or CoA since haki was developed by the kujas. As we have seen in the series the marines don’t tend to change peoples titles such as Zoro is still called pirate hunter even though he is a pirate and he never actually intended to be a pirate hunter.So Rayleigh was also given the name Dark king by some dumbass marine or commoner cause he was black(no racism intended)

What is CoA?, come on, write the full sentences!
It is Color of Armament, Haki that hardens body to be harder than steel. The body skin becomes black when it’s applied.
Is he using Moon walk or Sky walk when he’s attacking kizaru or just my imagination anyway good theory

Haki was not developed by the kujas. It was 1st discussed in the series when luffy was on amazon lily but they did not develop it. The origin of haki or the 1st person to use haki hasn’t been revealed yet.
Correction..!! Haki was not developed by the kujas… They only specialise in using it.. But many pirates and strong characters have been using it for a long time..

yeeah some dumbass marine first saw him (maybe even before the grand line) and was like: “hmm…yeah those guys are going to conquer the world, so you will be called “pirate king”. And you his first mate, covered completely in black are strong, too, so I’ll call you “dark king”…”, i like your theory and it actually makes sens but it can be assumed that their names were changed after conquering the grand line and actually becoming king(s).
I agree, probably, rayleigh was really the best CoA user at that time and therefore his name was changed due to this fact.
The fact that you can even see some similarities with the mugiwaras assures your/my theory. Luffy’s gonna have the strongest CoC, Zoro the strongest CoA and Sanji the strongest CoO, based on my observation of current events of the storyline (not excluding the assumption that all three of them master each of these categoies to a high level (or at least zoro will develope CoC too similar to rayleigh))
*Spoiler* I actually like this theory. Nicely done, what if instead of multilayer haki its more a case of how strong your haki is. Cause the Armament Haki (Busoshoku Haki) has to do with using your spirit to clad yourself with armour right? So who else on the sea would possibly have a stronger ‘will’ per say than the right hand of the pirate king? I mean Zoro has undying faith in Luffy right and we all know what lengths he will go at for Luffy? Based of the Zoro and Pika fight where the one with the stronger haki would win, it can be seen than he who is stronger would definitely win. So how much faith do you think the Rayleigh had in the actual Pirate King. Probably his resolve and spirit to see his Captains dream come true was so great that his Bososhoku Haki was the strongest on the sea. Hence the Dark King, the king of Bososhoku Haki.
Nice theory and nice thinking. But lets not forget that the darkness started showing only after the time skip. Before, oda didnt show black for armendment, even when luffy punched the pacifistas, and Reighley kicked kizaru there was no black. Hence it cant be that he was the best a armendment as black layer was not proportional to that in the past
so this is a pretty simple theory id say. BUT i wanna speak of something else. so as we all can see, rayleigh has a scar at his right eye. who else has a scar at his right eye? right its zorro-san 😀 so i think that didnt happen randomly. they got their scars from a demon. why a demon? in case of rayleigh we know that 1. he always uses a sword cause when the fight between kizaru and rayleigh started he said: havent used it for a while. 2. what exactly means “dark king”. so rayleigh is a king of a kingdom. and im 100% sure its the kingdom where demons live. but why the scar? to be honest i cant say that for sure but i think on the journey to raftel, someday they had to come to that island or portal which lead them there. demons are evil and want to kill everyone, and maybe the demons attacked the roger pirates and rayleigh killed their leader. and the leader “gave” rayleigh this scar. so where is the connection to zorro? zorro’s personality isnt finally revealed. is he realy like a devil or does he turn into a demon while fighting cause of his swords? anyway, zorro also has a scar. and he got that scar from fighting the demons who live in his swords. why? if he shows his “sword-demons” who is boss, they will give him their power. sorry for the bad english hope u guys know what i mean haha
Nice theory and good point. Even so I still can’t get correlation beetwen CoA and Dark. I agree with Agengo if the correlation is about “blackening” on CoA then I can’t say it was the real reason. Even Rayleigh said it himself CoA is like putting invisible armor on user, maybe it’s just visual effect.
I’d like to share my opinion as well. I think Rayleigh got Dark King tittle from his achievement for completed his voyage as Vice Captain and Roger’s Firstmate. At first, I think Dark from Dark King come from his name Rayleigh. If I change it a little and become Reilight then I got Rei(Zero) and light from this I got Dark ang King i got from his achivement. Well its just my opinion, don’t think it seriously.

Great theory…but let’s see carefully the title…it’s Dark ”KING”…that mean…he got that title exactly when the marines called Gol D. Roger as the Pirate ”King”…Oda said at the end of series it’s coming a great war…with the SHs pull the trigger…maybe the same thing happened when Roger found the OP…and maybe the Rayleigh did the dirty work against the marines (he was the v.capt.) till Roger finished with ^we don’t know what he did^(we know that only Roger himself know where and what is the OP) so as the right hand of the Pirate King who give us the dark/evil sense (looks like Zoro) he got the title of DK…that’s my thoughts…
Or maybe cuz he has conqueror’s haki and was the vice captain of the Pirate King
